Gaines Family Farmstead Issues Recall Due to Salmonella Concerns
Gaines Pet Treats LLC, a Birmingham-based pet product company, has issued a voluntary recall of its “Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips” dog treats due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall involves 204, 5-ounce bags of the product, which were distributed through online platforms and small independent retailers in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
Salmonella poses risks to both animals consuming the product and humans who handle it. For humans, the risk is heightened if proper hygiene, such as handwashing after handling, is not observed. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more severe conditions, including arterial infections and arthritis. People exhibiting these symptoms after contact with the product are advised to seek medical attention.
For pets, Salmonella can cause lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Some may exhibit milder symptoms, such as reduced appetite and abdominal pain. Infected animals, even those appearing healthy, can transmit the bacteria to other pets or humans. Pet owners whose animals show signs of illness after consuming the recalled treats are encouraged to contact their veterinarian.
The recalled product details are as follows:
- Name: Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips
- Size: 5-ounce bag
- Lot Number: 20061124
- Expiration Date: 12/11/2025
- Distribution Areas: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and online
No other lots of the product are implicated in the recall. Importantly, no illnesses have been reported to date, and Gaines Pet Treats stated that it has taken proactive steps to recover the potentially contaminated items.
The issue was discovered during routine third-party testing, which identified contamination in a related, unreleased lot of the same product. Although no direct evidence has tied the affected lot to illness, the company is taking precautionary measures to protect consumers and their pets.
Customers who purchased the affected treats are urged to stop using them immediately. Gaines Pet Treats is offering refunds or replacements and can be contacted at Recall@GainesFamilyFarmstead.com for assistance.
