Stratford Care Recalls Multiple Brands of Omega-3 Supplements Due to Elevated Levels of Vitamin A
Stratford Care USA, Inc., a Florida-based company, has issued a recall for several brands of its Omega-3 supplements designed for cats and dogs. The recall was prompted by potentially elevated levels of Vitamin A, which could lead to health issues in pets.
While Vitamin A is a crucial nutrient for dogs, exposure to high levels can result in a range of health complications, including general malaise, anorexia, nausea, skin peeling, weakness, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and even death. The severity of these symptoms is dependent on both the level of Vitamin A consumed and the duration of exposure.
The recall was initiated after Stratford Care received a single serious adverse event report from a customer. Their dogs exhibited signs of Vitamin A toxicity after consuming the supplement. This event remains the only one reported to date. Stratford Care is taking immediate action, cooperating with the FDA to remove all products with the affected lot numbers from the market. The company emphasizes that no other products are involved in this recall.
The affected Omega-3 supplements were distributed across the United States through various channels, including veterinary clinics, distribution centers, retail stores, and online marketplaces such as Amazon and Chewy. The product comes in a white plastic container with 60 soft gels and is marked at the bottom with “lot 31133 EXP 04/13/23” and “lot 30837 EXP 10/26/22”. Stratford Care USA, Inc. is primarily a distributor of supplements and other companion animal products. The affected lots were produced by a contract manufacturer and sold to Stratford Care.
Customers who have purchased the recalled supplement are urged to stop feeding it to their pets immediately and dispose of it in a secure container inaccessible to other animals, including wildlife. Retail partners, including veterinarians, should remove the affected product from their inventory and destroy it.
