Viva Pet Food Recalled Due To Contamination Risk
Viva Raw has issued a voluntary recall for specific dog and cat food recipes due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall affects the following products from Lot 21244:
- Viva Turkey for Dogs Ground
- Viva Turkey for Dogs Chunked
- Viva Turkey for Cats
- Viva Pure Turkey
- Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies
These recalled products are distributed as frozen 1 lb bricks in clear vacuum packaging. There are no expiration dates for these products.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections in both pets and humans. Even asymptomatic pets can carry and spread the pathogen through feces and saliva. Humans are at risk of infection through handling contaminated products, contact with infected pets, and surfaces that have been in contact with contaminated food.
In severe cases, infections can lead to meningitis and other fatal illnesses. Pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.
The affected products were distributed to consumers across all 50 states and the District of Columbia between May 16 and June 28, 2024. The contamination was discovered during an inspection by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA). Samples from Lot 21244 tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Consumers in possession of products from Lot 21244 should avoid feeding the recalled products to pets or any other animals. In addition, customers should immediately dispose of the food in a way that prevents access by children, pets, and wildlife.
Do not touch the contaminated food with bare hands. Use gloves or paper towels to place the food in a sealed plastic bag before disposing of it in the garbage. Sanitize any areas that may have come in contact with the contaminated product.
